IHNS Update – June 2021

1st IHNS Webnar

Thanks to all of you who participated in our 1st webinar on HPV-associated oropharynx cancer on May 27th.  The webinar was a great success!  Special thanks to all speakers, and to David Brinkman for running the event so well.

2nd IHNS Webinar

Our next webinar will be 16 September, with focus on Oral Cancer and Covid-19, and will feature speakers Professor Mary Toner (St James); Dr Ralph Gilbert (Toronto); Ms Deirdre Leavy (St James), and Professor Richard Shaw (Liverpool).  Details including full program and registration instructions will follow soon.

1st Annual Meeting Announced

We are delighted to announce that 1st annual meeting will be in Lyrath Hotel in Kilkenny on 6/7 May 2022.  If anyone, including Associate or Affiliate members, is interested in being part of Program Organizing Committee to help develop Scientific program, please contact me.   We are promising a top quality program that will appeal to everyone, and will also have plenty of room for Free Papers.  We will plan to open Abstract submission around January 2022.

Patient Care subcommittee

In other developments, our Patient Care subcommittee recently held its first meeting, chaired by Dr Eleanor O’Sullivan and Ms Cherith Semple.  Part of the initial focus will be to develop content for website, which will be accessible to patients.  To this end we are most interested in receiving patient stories (with consent), written and/or video, detailing patient journeys from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.  If any units are involved in such or are interested in creating same we would be very happy to hear from you.  We also wish to put up videos on self-examination.  If anyone would like to contribute, please contact Eleanor or Cherith (on cc line above).

The other side of Patient Care will focus on development of patient information leaflets and resources, and professional guidance for colleagues (the latter only available to logged in members). If anyone has any material they would like to share or would like to contribute anything or be involved in developing these resources, please contact me.

Get Involved: Education, Research, Patient Care, and Affiliate subcommittees

Finally, for any member who would like to be involved in IHNS activities in any way, it is still possible to join Education, Research, Patient Care, and Affiliate subcommittees. We are also particularly keen that Associate and Affiliate members will join the Education, Research, and Patient Care subcommittees, to ensure that activities and Society are relevant to these groups also. Anyone interested in any of these groups please contact Noreen O’Regan (for Affiliate members) or myself (emails on cc line above)

Please feel free to share this update to colleagues or members of your MDT who are not already IHNS members.

Best wishes, Happy Summer, and look forward to seeing you at the next Webinar
